On Friday, December 12th, Jillian had a very exciting morning. It started with our Friday tradition: pink pancakes at Bubbie's house. Then, Jillian and I had hair appointments with Miss Tammy. I'm not completely convinced that Jillian really needed a trim, but she was sure of it so I let her get pampered, too. While she was in Miss Tammy's chair she let everyone know that she would be visiting Santa later that day and that she planned to ask him for a candy cane. No more. No less. All that kid wants is a candy cane. Last year, she sat on his lap eating a candy cane and she expected a repeat performance. So, Miss Tammy gave her the Santa's lap special hairdo and off we went to the mall closest to Bubbie's house.
Guess what? No Santa. After making a phone call, we learned that he was appearing at the other mall across town. Off we went again, getting dangerously close to nap time. We stood in line for about 20 minutes watching other children and tiny babies taking their turn on Santa's lap. Jillian was excited and talking all about her turn . . . until it was her turn. Then, she crawled up my body like a monkey and wouldn't let go. I knelt down on the floor with her in my arms and Santa was so sweet and patient and kind and convincingly real, BUT he did NOT have any CANDY CANES. I truly believe he might have been able to coax her up onto his knee if he had one. What did he have for his little visitors? A cheesy promotional coloring book for The Tale of Despereaux. Neat. So, that was a bust and we left the mall with a sad little girl still wishing for a candy cane.
No worries. Remember how King Triton always saves the day? Well, he also has an office full of candy canes. So, we stopped by campus and he mended her little broken heart with a tiny little candy cane.
